Each graduate program sets their own terms of admission and application deadlines. Applicants can only apply for admission for the terms displayed below. Any questions regarding the application deadline should be directed to the graduate program representative.

What are the requirements to apply for Secondary Education at WVU?

University Requirements

To be eligible for admission into a graduate program at WVU an applicant must submit official, bachelors degree transcripts from a regionally accredited institution and hold a GPA of at least 2.75.

WVU operates decentralized admissions. Decentralized admissions allows each graduate program to set its own application requirements in addition to the University requirements.

Program Requirements

To be eligible for admission into the Secondary Education graduate program an applicant must submit the following documentation:

  • GRE
  • PRAXIS
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Essay/Writing Sample (Contact a Graduate Program Representative for a Prompt)

Additional application considerations

  • Writing sample - One-page goal statement, containing professional experiences, and career ambitions
  • GRE scored required if no passing PRAXIS scores submitted
  • Passing required West Virginia Praxis CORE Academic Skills for Educators tests in reading, writing and math. (Reading, 156; Writing, 162; and Math, 150)
  • The Praxis CORE may be waived with an enhanced ACT score of 26 or higher, a re-centered SAT score of 1125 (April 1995), or a revised SAT of 1170 (March 2005) or higher OR a 26 ACT or Math and Critical Reading SAT total of 1170 (pre-March 2016 test sitting) or an Evidence Based Reading/Writing and Math Section 1240 (post-March 2016 test sitting) OR a GRE score of 800 prior to Fall 2011 or 286 after Fall 2011.
